Celebrating Rent Strikers and Scottish Suffragettes: Mary Barbour and other Strong Women of the Clydeside
Join us digitally for a virtual tour of Govan, Glasgow, UK as we highlight and celebrate the work of Mary Barbour and the women who made up her ‘army’. We’ll be speaking out in this pre-recorded creative event – sharing quotes, asking questions, and generally celebrating their lives and voices. Learn about the 1915 Rent Strike Campaigners, Govan’s Suffragettes, and other important Clydeside activists – from their own words. You will hear the stories of important Clydesiders as we quote Mary Barbour, Helen Crawfurd, Agnes Dollan – alongside other Peace Crusaders and #ScottishSuffragettes. We’ll be sharing images from our archive of past ‘artwalks’ (which we’ve been hosting for the last seven years in Govan) where we are chalking, singing, and using other creative interventions and performance techniques to ‘revoice’ the words and thoughts of these strong women of the Clydeside. We’ll also be highlighting important moments and places in Mary Barbour’s life. Please note that this is a ‘happening’ as much as a digital walking tour and informal celebration.
You will be led by a creative team of artists, activists, and local historians who have been researching these histories for seven years as part of the ‘Protests & Suffragettes’ project, led by socially-engaged artist Dr t s Beall and including Clare Thompson, Ian McCracken, Lesley Mitchell, Stacy Nicolson, Lydia Everett, Inês Cavaco, and Trish Caird. Join us as we celebrate these #StrongWomenoftheClydeside!
