Science Museum Group
https://www.sciencemuseumgroup.org.uk/
The Science Museum Group cares for an astonishingly diverse and internationally significant collection of 7.3 million items from science, technology, engineering, medicine, transport and media. These objects tell the story of our world—from the rise of the Indus Valley civilisation over 3,000 years ago to the microchips powering our connected planet today.
History Day 2022 contributions
The Science Museum Group has contributed three pre-made resources to the Padlet for the Everyday Technology Firsts session:
- A Youtube video created by the Science Museum Group on Kenneth Grange, who designed the Kenwood Chef, a Kodak camera and the Inter-City 125 locomotive.
- A web page on typewriters and assistive technology for blind and partially sighted people.
- A web page on the history of the vacuum cleaner
History Day 2020 contributions
The Science Museum Group has been collecting objects, archival material and ephemera relating to the current pandemic since before the lockdown. The format of this session was a virtual panel of staff from the Group, including the Keeper of Medicine and others, to discuss the challenges of creating such a collection at this difficult time, specifically the practicalities, ethical issues, emotional concerns, intellectual approaches to decide what to collect, political aspects, the role of social media, and the unforeseen benefits arising from coordination within the Group and with other organisations collecting similar material.
