Many famous scientists made important discoveries and inventions at the Ri in the 19th and early 20th centuries. These were all revealed to the public for the first time in the Ri’s famous Theatre in Mayfair.
Watch the CHRISTMAS LECTURES (1825-present; first broadcast 1966)
Started by Michael Faraday in 1825 the CHRISTMAS LECTURES are the longest running series of talks for young people in the world. They were the first science programme on UK television in 1936 and have been broadcast every year since 1966. The 2024 Christmas Lecturer is Chris Van Tulleken.
New insights into the Miners’ Lamp and Humphry Davy’s inventions
The transcription of over 13,000 pages of Humphry Davy’s scientific notebooks reveal new insights into his life and works, including the fact that he thought his Miners’ safety lamp, which saved thousands of lives, was under-appreciated.
